Biblical definition of Deliverance
In Christianity, deliverance ministry refers to the activity of cleansing a person of demons and evil spirits in order to address problems manifesting in their life as a result of the presence of said entities and the root causes of their authority to oppress the person.
In the Bible, “deliverance” conveys an overall picture of salvation through the hand of a loving and powerful God. It describes the full impact of Jesus’ death and resurrection being applied to and outworked in the lives of God’s people. And it signifies the fullness of freedom in Christ.
Four meanings of deliverance – in short:
- “to deliver out of the hands of…, to escape.” – This meaning illustrates God’s rescue of His people from the dominion of Satan and the world system
- adding the idea – not only of rescue – of “drawing someone to one’s self.” This concept shows that God’s motive behind deliverance is His fervent desire to fellowship with His people upon whom He has set His unfathomable love.
- “to deliver into the hands of…for the purpose of judgement.” – This idea involves God bringing His people into confrontation with their enemies so that they can defeat them in battle
- “to have ample space between oneself and one’s enemies.” – It is the end result and goal of the process of deliverance, where one’s enemies have been beaten back and brought into subjection, so that they do not press in to harass, distress, and endanger a person.
As we proceed through the interview session and follow up sessions, it often becomes apparent that one or more issues have been pervasive in someone’s life. These have often limited their spiritual, emotional and relational growth. These issues can be defined as spiritual strongholds.
People can have strongholds of pride, fear/anxiety, depression, anger, lust, pornography and more. They function like chains. They keep people in bondage and not truly walking in the full freedom Jesus has for them.
We provide counseling services and biblically-based tools to help people in all of these areas, including understanding their God-given temperaments and associated needs, strengths and weaknesses. These are useful and helpful but sometimes they are not enough.
Some other indicators we need deliverance are:
- The inability to break free from sinful habits.
- You know you are being constantly hassled by evil spirits.
- You constantly feel like you are not a good person because of your perceived failures.
- You lack the fruits of the Holy Spirit – Love, Joy, Peace, Kindness, Gentleness, Patience, Faithfulness and Self Control.
- You are chronically sick, and/or Doctors cannot seem to heal the issue(s) or illness.
- Compulsive behaviour.
- Attraction to the occult. If you have participated in any occultic practice, e.g. Ouija Boards, Séance, Fortune Telling, Horoscopes, Hypnosis etc, or Witchcraft, or Freemasonry, YOU will NEED Deliverance!
- Traumatic events that have impacted your life negatively.
- Unforgiving sins from ancestors (generational curses).
- Hereditary patterns like Asthma, Cancer, Diabetes, Mental problems, Heart disease etc.
- Had an operation where it required to be placed under anaesthesia.
We also believe the modern Church’s refusal to address deliverance or acknowledge that Christians can even have demons, is a major reason why Churches are so full of messed-up, hurt people.
During a deliverance session the following are just a few topics that we cover/address:
- Anxiety, Fear
- Bitterness
- Occult and idolatry
- Rejection
- Self hatred
- Sin, entry points and demonization
- Sins of fathers (generational/bloodline curses)
- Spirit world realities
- Spiritual roots, healing and deliverance
- Unforgiveness
- Ungodly beliefs and strongholds
- Unlovingness
Home Deliverance
Raphah Ministries also organize the removal from homes of items that are believed to harbor demons, including fantasy or horror novels, and artworks / artifacts depicting pagan gods. Clients are instructed to burn items that are related to idol worship, “demon drawing” symbols and music that summons demons and many other items. Raphah Ministries will always explain why certain items need to be removed or what the implication of the item is in the client’s life, home, etc. This Ministry will never force any person to destroy items, but will leave it up to the client to pray about it and awaits the Holy Spirit to confirm such action.
Deliverance – The Process
What is deliverance – in short
Deliverance in short is the casting out of demons/spirits and it’s done by invoking the Name and Authority of Jesus.
How do you do deliverance
It begins with an interview/consultation/counselling:
- to see why the person wants prayer
- identify the source and severity of the wounds and
- to determine the source and extent of demonization.
The process
The process that follows is:
- identify the legal rights for the demonization
- heal the wounds
- cast out the demons/spirits
- provide and instruct the client with self-inner healing prayers for any remaining wounds, and self-deliverance prayers to cast out any remaining demons/spirits
The whole process is peaceful, very thorough, and absolutely confidential
What is a Demon/Spirit?
What is a demon/spirit?
A demon/spirit is a fallen angel, one of the angels that followed Satan when he declared that he’d be like God, “The Most High”.
What is a demon’s/spirit’s purpose, job, or task?
A demon’s purpose is to kill, steal, and destroy people. They have no redeeming qualities, they are pure evil. Each demon has a very specific function (or job), and their individual function can be almost anything negative that can happen to a human being. (But not everything negative that happens is a demon.)
How do you get a demon/spirit?
A demon’s/spirit’s ability to enter is based on sin: Generational sin, Volitional (voluntary) sin, or sin Perpetrated Against Us.
What causes people to feel tormented?
People feel tormented when a demon/spirit is attacking an emotional or physical wound, a wound that was so severe that we disassociated. The dissociative (wounded) part is still at the level of emotion as when the trauma happened. The demon/spirit is tormenting that wounded part and intensifying the pain.
Are demons/spirits all the same, or do they have different characteristics?
Demons are as different as people. Some are sarcastic, some have a sense of humour (although depraved), some seem dumb, others are very devious, some will tattle on each other (like children,) some are very technical (and won’t go unless everything is done exactly right), and all demons/spirits speak every language.
Are some demons/spirits more powerful than others?
Demons/spirits work in a hierarchy, like an army. They recognize the difference in rank among each other. No Demon’s/spirit’s power is a match for the Name and Authority of Jesus. Their power is less than a gnat compared to Jesus.
Why doesn’t every demon/spirit leave instantly by saying “in Jesus name”?
God has established the rules that Satan must play by. Satan does not have free reign to do 100% as he wants. Demons/spirits may have a ”Legal Right” to stay (according to the rules that God has set up).
What is a demonic “Legal Right”?
A demonic/spiritual “legal right” is the ability to “enter” or “stay” (according to Gods rules). It’s always associated with sin that’s enumerated in God’s Word.
What are examples of a legal right?
A demon’s legal right can be the sin that allowed it to enter. It can be the overwhelming emotion from the sinful abuse. It can be a sinful action that resulted from the original abuse. It can be a lie believed by a wounded part of us, and it can be in the will of the core person for the demon to stay (some people actually like their demons). A demon can even have multiple legal rights.
